Meitnerium is a radioactive man made chemical element in the periodic table, with the symbol Mt and an atomic number of 109. Because it is not found naturally on Earth, chemists have to create it in a lab. Its half life, or the amount of time it takes for half of the element to go away is a little over one second. Meitnerium was first made in 1982.

The element is named in honor of Lise Meitner (1878-1968).
Meitnerium is thought to be a solid that is similar to the other elements in its group, though no one can tell what it looks like as chemists can not create enough of it to do so.
